In past blog posts, we have talked a bit about malware. AV-Test processed an average of 54,000 samples per day in 2010, which is up from an average of 33,000 in 2009. Fraud prevention always needs to be at the front of your mind, whether it’s for your company or for yourself.

We have an addition to the EVS Family! Patricia McCormack (we call her Patty) started at EVS a little bit ago as an Account Manager. Not only does she have an awesome personality and is tons of fun to work with, but she knows her stuff about id verification and fraud prevention!

When you’re on the social networking site, Facebook, fraud prevention and id verification may not be on the top of your mind… but it should be. I’ve noticed several of my friends posting “their first Facebook status” and at first I thought “ooh, that’s fun, I wonder what the first thing I said on here.” But I’ve learned not to click on links of the new, and usually useless, applications that are being passed around. And thankfully, my instinct was correct.

I didn’t think many people used the chat program ICQ anymore, but just in case you do there are reports of malicious ads occurring when using this program. The Securelist blog did research on the matter, and found the scareware (fake anti-virus) was popping up when ICQ was getting information, or displaying, new ads.

To address your needs, we are changing our IdentiFlo solutions to cater to what you need and want out of EVS id verification and fraud prevention solutions. We will launch the new product early this year.

According to the Krebs on Security blog, Microsoft has released security updates to fix several vulnerabilities in the Windows OS. However, none of the patches address the zero-day flaws that can remain undetected after they are launched. Unfortunately, id verification is the last thing a person will think of if they receive a link from a person they know.

It’s important to always stay on top of your industry, and what better way to do that than attend conferences and tradeshows. We will have EVS representatives at the Prepaid Expo USA March 6 – 9, 2011 in Orlando, Florida.

While the Red Flags Rule has been talked about for quite some time, it was finally passed. On December 18, 2010 President Obama signed into law the Red Flag Program Clarification Act. According to FTC.gov, “The Red Flags Rule requires many businesses and organizations to implement a written Identity Theft Prevention Program designed to detect the warning signs — or "red flags" — of identity theft in their day-to-day operations.”
